I was honored to be a guest on The World of Football podcast hosted by Randy Snow.
Randy had me on to tell some of the fascinating football stories I’ve uncovered in my virtual sports time travel trips back into the past. But before we got to that Randy (who is a great host) asked me about The Sports Time Traveler and the books I’ve written on baseball and golf.
At the bottom of this post you’ll find the link to the podcast on YouTube.
Here’s a quick overview of what you’ll hear on the podcast with the approximate time stamps noted so you can listen to the parts in which you’re interested:
0:00 - 5:30 - How The Sports Time Traveler got started
5:30 - 11:00 - My book, “The 1973 Mets - You’ve Got to Believe.”
11:00 - 13:30 - My book, “Great Golf Tournaments.” In this portion, I tell the remarkable story of Joe Louis, the boxer, becoming the first African-American to play a PGA TOUR event with PGA TOUR approval, and subsequently making the cut in a PGA TOUR event. No other athlete from another sport, that is of Joe Louis’s prominence, has ever made the cut in a PGA TOUR event.
13:30 - 15:30 - My forthcoming book, “The 1955 Brooklyn Dodgers - My Dad’s Team.” This book is a tribute to my 91 year old dad who grew up following the Dodgers as they lost the World Series to the Yankees 5 times from 1941 - 1953, and then got another shot at them in 1955.
NOW WE GET TO FOOTBALL!
15:30 - 26:00 - Y.A. Tittle’s quest for a title in 1963 with the New York Giants.
26:00 - 38:30 - The 1932 Colgate football team that went unbeaten, untied and unscored upon and were “uninvited” to the Rose Bowl.
38:30 - 53:00 - A touching and profoundly sad story about President Kennedy’s plans to see Navy, led by Roger Staubach, compete for the 1963 national championship in the Cotton Bowl. JFK, a WWII navy war hero, was a huge Navy football fan.
53:00 - 57:00 - Roger Staubach coins the term “Hail Mary Pass” as he fires the Hail Mary that enabled the Dallas Cowboys to shock the top seeded Minnesota Vikings in the 1975 NFL Divisional Playoffs. And the email I received from Roger Staubach himself earlier this year via his best friend from the 1963 Navy team.
59:00 - 60:00 - How to find these and more stories on the internet.
60:00 - END - A little bit about the college class I teach on business creativity and innovation and how to develop big, breakthrough ideas. And the answer to why the University of North Florida doesn’t have a football team!
I’d love to hear your feedback.
