I miss those "challenge" trades of major leaguer for major leaguer at the same position. Ozzie Smith for Garry Templeton is my favorite. Also loved the Carney Lansford for Tony Armas deal.
Worst trade in baseball history! Jack Lang, the Mets' beat writer for the Staten Island Advance said that on the day of the trade, Mets' manager Gil Hodges told him, "he hated to let Nolan Ryan go because he still feels the big right-hander from Texas has the potential to become a big star."
This reminds me of the Mets trading center fielder Tommie Agee after the 1972 season, Agee had been one of the makers of the miracle in 1969. The Mets were left with a hole in center after dumping Agee. But Agee was out of baseball after a dismal 1973 season with the Astros and Cardinals.

Smith for Templeton trade was an fascinating one. Templeton looked like he was going to be a hall of fame player, but it worked out the opposite.
Of course the Mets also did the Costanza when they traded Ryan for Fregosi.

This is always a dilemma. When to offload aging talent and bring in promising youth.
