The Sports Time Traveler has come back to the present for a rare appearance to share the news about a new book, The 1955 Brooklyn Dodgers - My Dad’s Team.
The book launches on Amazon in paperback and Kindle editions on May 1st.
The book is dedicated to my dad, a true Brooklyn Dodgers fan, and a great father and family man. This book is the best father’s day present I’ve ever given him.
If you message me, I will share a chapter via a PDF file.
My dad grew up at the perfect age to fall in love with the old Brooklyn Dodgers. His earliest memories of the Dodgers are from the 1941 World Series. That was the first time the Dodgers appeared in the Fall Classic since 1920. They played the Yankees and lost. My dad often told me the story of Mickey Owen’s passed ball that cost the Dodgers a sure win in game 4, and altered the outcome of the series.
In 1947, the Dodgers made it to the World Series again. Again, they played the Yankees, and lost. They played the Yankees in the World Series in 1949, 1952 and 1953, and lost every time.
And then there was the most gut-wrenching loss of all. The miserable moment in 1951, when ahead 4 - 2 in the bottom of the 9th inning of the final playoff game to go to the World Series, Bobby Thomson hit the “shot heard round the world.” And Russ Hodges screamed deliriously into his radio microphone at the Polo Grounds, “The Giants win the pennant! The Giants win the pennant!”
By 1955, my dad was away at college, and the Dodgers no longer dominated all his waking moments. So I picked the year 1955 to follow the Dodgers for an entire season, one day at a time. It’s a season my dad never had the opportunity to follow as closely as he could all those earlier years.
In the book, I only included stories of games for which there was something so compelling, so exciting, I just had to share it.
The book provides the reader with the feeling that you’re back in 1955 following the games. And you never find out who wins until the end of a chapter. The drama builds until the last out is made.
Take the journey with me on May 1st and go back in time to experience The 1955 Brooklyn Dodgers - My Dad’s Team.
